Webinar Series on Filipino Identity and Contemporary Cultural Practice Launches

MANILA, Philippines — An international webinar series entitled “Voices from the Field: Filipino Identity and Contemporary Cultural Practice” launched today. The said webinar series will explore topics related to Filipino identity, affirmation, education and contemporary cultural practice, and the discussions will be divided in three sessions.

The schedule is as follows:

Webinar 1:

Oct. 15, Thursday at 6 p.m. (United States PST) or on Oct. 16, Friday at 9 a.m. (PHT)

“Ako o Tayo? (P/F) Filipino (a/ox): Multidisciplinary Conversations on Filipino Identity and Cultural Practice”

The panelists will discuss varying experiences with Filipinos who grew up in the Philippines and the diaspora (Filipino diaspora), and how it has shaped identity and the idea of “Filipinoness.” They will delve into the past, unravel the pressing issues in 2020, and take a deeper look at identity affirmation and cultural practices in both the Philippines and the diaspora.

With an increase in indigenous products and services in the marketplace, the right balance is sought out to ensure that indigenous peoples are protected. The panelists will talk about indigenous production and consumption in the contemporary setting and its effects on the community.

“Indigenous Symbolism and Plurality in Contemporary Performance: Dialogue on Sensibilities, Sensitivities, and Presenting ‘Filipino’”

“Indigenous Symbolism and Plurality in Contemporary Performance: Dialogue on Sensibilities, Sensitivities, and Presenting ‘Filipino’”

How do performance companies portray the plurality of Philippine Culture? How are indigenous symbols portrayed? The panelists will discuss with performance artists from both the Philippines and the United States.

About the Program

“Voices from the Field: Filipino Identity and Contemporary Cultural Practice” is an international webinar series that intends to create meaningful dialogue around different topics related to Filipino identity, affirmation, education, and contemporary cultural practice. We seek to investigate varying perspectives by bridging interdisciplinary voices from both the Philippines and the diaspora.
