MANILA, Philippines — Mexico and the Philippines celebrated the 70th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations on April 14, Friday. The occasion was marked by illuminating iconic buildings and monuments in both country’s capitals, including the Jose Rizal Monument in the Philippines and the buildings of the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs and the Senate in Mexico.

The event was the start of a series of commemorative activities throughout the year, including a conference titled “Overview of Mexico-Philippines Relations,” which took place on April 17th at the Matías Romero Institute, the Diplomatic Academy of Mexico.

The ties between Mexico and the Philippines go back to the Manila-Acapulco galleon trade, which saw an exchange of goods, ideas, and people that had a profound impact on both countries and the world. Mexico’s participation in the liberation of the Philippines during World War II further reinforced the bond between the two nations.

Today, Mexico and the Philippines remain active players in trans-Pacific trade, with a strong commitment to cooperation.

The Mexico-Philippines relationship is characterized by extensive political dialogue and commonalities at bilateral and multilateral levels. This has led to fruitful collaboration on issues of common interest, including climate change, universal access to vaccines and medicines, nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, among others.

The commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mexico and the Philippines highlights the shared history between the two countries and sets the tone for further deepening political dialogue and cooperation for the benefit of their societies.
